I only have a few short words for our loss against Florida State. I didn’t want to talk about that much, but I have a question for any intelligent baseball fans out there…
Last year, I didn’t care much for baseball, but I’ve become a pretty casual fan this year and I watch a decent amount of games. Although, there’s one thing I saw today that I just don’t get at all.
Why did we just watch those strikes go by in the 9th inning? The guys calling the game said, “Good idea, take the strikes,” and I was lost. I didn’t understand it all. How does taking those first two strikes help us? To me, it just looked like it was putting us in an even deeper hole (and I got the perfect example to back this up — Jason Esposito).
Esposito, our best player, was going up to bat as the game-tieing run, we couldn’t ask for a better position to be in (considering the circumstances). Oh wait, maybe not, because Espo’ decides to watch the first two strikes fly by him. Now it’s really in trouble, he has to swing at basically everything now, and McGee knows it. So what did the ACC’s best closer do? He made Esposito chase an outside pitch… and if you’re keeping count, that makes 3 strikes and Esposito is out.
Then again, what do I know? I haven’t been watching baseball very long, so maybe I’m just clueless to why it is a good idea. Do any more-knowledgable baseball fans want to explain this to me?
