QB Race

Due to the lack of recent Commodore news, I’ve chosen to go to the opinion route rather than waiting around for basketball & football seasons to come back – which means I’m going to do more peaking my mind than spitting out stats and looking at matchups. Today, I’m going to get into the ‘ole QB Battle – one of the most commonly talked about thing since Jay Cutler left for the pros.

At Tuesday’s practice, Larry Smith split some time with fellow QBs Jared Funk and Charlie Goro. While the much-hyped Jordan Rodgers (Arron Rodger’s brother) was spending the majority of his learning the playbook, instead of being on the field. I’m going to leave you my opinion on the four guys – starting with the senior, Jared Funk.

Jared Funk – Senior

Throughout Jared whole career, he’s only came out when either things were going really good for us or really bad for us, and lately it’s been the bad situation. Sometimes I actually feel sorry for the guy, he spends more time attempting to block punts rather than taking snaps – which, by the way, it very wierd. And I’ll go ahead and break it him, he’ll be doing  the same thing this year.

Charlie Goro – Freshman(RS)

You may not of heard of Charlie before, and that’s because he was red-shirted this past season, but don’t go thinking he doesn’t have any skill – we’re talking about a kid who through 38 TDs and only 3 picks in his final year in high school, don’t be surprised if his name pops up a lot in this year’s QB race.

Jordan Rodgers – sophomore(JuCo)

I can honestly say that I have never been this excited about a freshman – mostly because he’s the brother of one of my favorite players in the all of the NFL, Jordan Rodgers. But don’t think that’s the only reason he got the scholarship offer, he showed an amazing skill set at his Junior College, California-Butte. Can’t wait to see if he makes some noise at spring practice.

Larry Smith – Junior

Larry’s the favorite coming into the year. He’s had his good days (2008: Music City Bowl… 2009: Georgia Tech, West Carolina) and his bad days (2009: 10 out of the 12 games we played).

He’s also got plenty of critics. People look at his play last year, and all they do is complain  and say “put in the backup!” I, on the other hand, support Larry. You see, he can say something that no other Vandy QB  had done in 50 years, win us a bowl game – which forever puts him in my favorite list.

Now, if only do it again.

Hey Vandy fans! This is Jimbo from Park Ridge. You still sitting on Goro? Sheesh. That kid was freakn amazing and a joy to watch him work his game. I also got to watch him a couple of times when Goro was playing basketball. Goro is one of the quickest cats I’ve ever seen. I think he runs a 10.9 in the 100M. What the heck are is the Vandy coach waiting for? PLAY GORO at QB! Heck, put him in at some receiver position to take advantage of his speed.
